Weihnachtmärkts in Berlin
“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.”
~Norman Vincent Peale
When I arrived in Germany, the thought of visiting the Christmas markets sent a wave of excitement through me. Having visited the German Weihnachtmärkts before, I knew exactly what to expect and what was awaiting me at the markets.
The Christmas markets in Berlin are such a joy to experience! One evening, I set off for a market located in Alexanderplatz. Upon my arrival, my first order of business was to find a hat; with temperatures hovering around -13 degrees Celsius (9 degrees Fahrenheit), walking around without one wasn’t even an option. After completing this task, the fun could officially start.
These markets are filled with such a special energy that’s specific to Christmastime. The air is full of hope and possibilities, camaraderie among kindred spirits, and love for family and friends. Coming out to enjoy the sights, sounds, and tastes of the market is a family affair, and everyone is in attendance: grandparents, children, parents, and friends. The fondness people feel for each other, and this time of year, is palpable.
As I sipped a snowman-decorated styrofoam cup full of tasty glühwein, I watched people stroll by, with their warm breath swirling through the cold night air as they discussed their purchases and general gossip of the day. As the glühwein warmed my hands and throat, the sight of loved ones sharing in this market experience warmed my heart.
